SOTERIS KEFALAS, THE ATHLETE


Soteris Kefalas showed his athletic talent in an early age. At the age of twelve, he started playing football systematically in the Youth Team of Paralimni and the Czech coach Pluskal taught him the basic steps in football.At high school, he was also a track athlete and participated with the school's team. His best performance in track was in the 100 metres race during the Pancyprian Student Track Games when he took fourthplace with a time of 11 seconds. Additionally, he had been member of the Track and Field Team of Evagoras Gymnastics Club of Famagusta and took part in many track and field meetings.

His involvement in sports led him to the establishment of the Volley Ball Team of the Paralimni Athletic club. This active commitment contributed in leading the team to the First Division of Volley Ball in Cyprus while he remained a player of the team from 1973-75.
 
In 1976, he went to Anorthosis, the Famagusta Football Club, where he played successfully for three consecutive years and scored 20 goals. A player of talent and experience, Kefalas gained the confidence of his coach who did not hesitate to entrust in him the glorious blue and white shirt with the number 7. Read More.
With a sense of great respect for the shirt and aware of the great burden of his responsibilities, Kefalas responded to the challenge and made every effort to contribute to his team to the best of his ability. A player of inexhaustible stamina and great speed, makes excellent play from the centre spot, wonderful and comfortable dribbling and shoots with strength and accuracy.   Paralimni ace who comes from Paralimni, scored 8 valuable goals in the championship that has just ended 1977-78. The wing-footed right winger of the Anorthosis, who offered so much to his team he was always a threat to the other side’s goalkeepers.

 

After that, he went to study in New York, U.S.A. In the New York, he played with the Pancyprian Athletic Club in 1979 where he was a top scorer for three years. During his short-stay at this football club he had the opportunities to play with great Greek soccer players, such as Domazos, Papaioannou, Apostolides, Toskas and many other players who learned so much from them concerning football. In his first year at Pancyprian Football club was the Most Valuable Palyer and second scorer with 11 goals. Also, he conquered three championships, one New York Cup and two American Cups. Read More.

He left New York and went for studies at Denver University, Colorado with a scholarship in 1981.There, he played football with the University Team where again he was the top scorer for three consecutive years. In three years as a varsity soccer player, he scored a record 104 goals - the best record in Denver University history. In one year he scored an incredible 47 goals, a record for the University and this record placed him second scorer throughout the U.S.A. among the Universities.

For his services and contribution, he was awarded distinction in sports, an award given by the University to athletes with special records.Particurarly, on 25 of October 2007, he was awarded with the highest honor the Hall of Fame Athlete for the best soccer player at University of Denver. Read More. He gained a lot of recognition and the local newspapers wrote a lot of articles about his talent and excellent performance. Soteris Kefalas had proposals to play in the North American Soccer League (NASL) but he turned them down due to his wish to continue his studies. 



On his return to Cyprus in 1984 he ended his successful football career playing at Paralimni Football Club until 1988. A genuine football talent that was developed at the arsenal set by Pluskal. Fast, strong, with a technical shot, beyond all, though, humble and allegiant, he was the favor of Pluskal. Read More. 

Since 1990 and until today he is actively involved in Squashand he
is the founder
of the Famagusta Squash Team. Since 1995 he is a member of the Cyprus Squash Federation
